golden dorado

Golden dorado is an iconic species of rivers and streams in many parts of South America. Their amazing color, strong fight, and stark colors make them the epicenter of an emerging recreational fishery with global reach but also local and regional economic benefits. My lab conducted studies assessing the effects of catch-and-release on golden dorado, as well as the social norms of recreational anglers targeting this species. Since these studies, the development of the golden dorado recreational fishery has accelerated, yet there are still so many questions outstanding related to their ecology and management. Currently, we are using genetics/genomics to quantify the population structure of golden dorado as a means to identify what the appropriate ‘management unit’ is for this species, especially in an environment that continues to be threatened by fragmentation (i.e., dams), and other human impacts.
